Class 2
Making Models that Work
So you’ve got a creative idea for a planting design…
How does the idea grow into something realistic, site-specific, and resilient? In-depth plant knowledge supports the development and implementation of successful planting designs. While creative prompts and inspirations can spur out-of-the-box thinking, delivering on that promise requires increasingly intimate views of plant life. This session explores a quantitative method for planting design that relies heavily on metrics of plant behavior, performance, and ecological value to create model plant communities. Natural plant communities offer countless pattern precedents to inspire planting plans. The aim of this session is to connect design thinking to the ecological realities of plants living in horticultural landscapes.

Visual Estimates of Proportions of Mixtures
This handout is never far from me when I’m working on a planting model. As the name implies, it’s a helpful tool for visual estimation and particularly helpful when attempting to translate photos of wild plant communities into garden-scale plantings.
